  1. I love long train trips, but they can start to wear thin after a day or so. Definitely bring some music and good reading material. Also, bring along a journal and a digital camera if you have one. Take lots of pictures of the passing scenery and use the journal to record your thoughts and observations. One of the best ways to keep yourself occupied on such a long journey is to enjoy the company of your fellow passengers. Don't be afraid to strike up a conversation during meals or while you're relaxing in the Lounge Car. Have a great trip!

  2. a book and a change of clothes, toothbrush and paste. A small first aid kit.( the bare minimum as its only for 46 hours and its a train so there is no over head compartment)

  3. This is a 46 hour train journey, and you're not speaking Russian, so you're in the USA or Canada.  Those long trains are luxury trains aimed at the cruise-ship crowd.  They have toilet paper. :)

#1. Pack so your more valuable stuff (iPod) is in one tiny bag you can take with you when you go to the lounge or diner, and you can leave the rest of your carryons at your seat.

This is important because, please, do not sit in your set the whole trip.  This train will have a nice lounge which is for your use.  It will also have a full service dining car, which serves real, good meals that aren't fried or microwaved.   Eat every meal you can in the diner, and enjoy the scenery from the lounge.  If you spend at least half your waking hours away from your seat, you're doing it right!

As soon as the conductor takes your ticket, get up and explore the train.  Find the lounge and diner.  They won't let you into sleepers if you're a coach passenger, though, so if you head into a car that's all sleepers, go back.

#2.  Coach doesn't have showers but you can spongebath in the bathroom.  Don't hog the handicap bathroom, but there are other large bathrooms.  So, bring along a towel, a couple of washcloths, and a couple of ziploc bags for wet washcloths.

AC power is a little hard to find but not impossible.

#3. Don't mind being late, really late.   The North American railroad system is totally overloaded.  The freights can't keep their own trains on time, they're not picking on Amtrak.   However it's still a really fun way to travel.  Amtrak will guarantee your connections as long as you're in the Amtrak system (trains, buses etc.)  Have a phone to call your pickup, and keep the phone OFF most of the time so you don't have to worry about recharging it.

  4. Earplugs, and maybe a sleep mask.

You will find it much easier to sleep with those.

For the rest, books, puzzles and other things to entertain yourself with, some snacks and water to drink, soft drinks too if you like them.

  5. Bring patience! This may sound silly but you'd be surprized about how many people complain about 'how long' their trip was and when questioned further I find that the travel time was what was listed in the schedule. Also, bring an attitude that the travel time is part of your trip to enjoy. If speed of travel was your priority then YOU choose the wrong mode. Take the other advice above and have a good trip.

  6. PSP has saved me from things like this. also a MP3 player. maybe some magazines stuff for head aches also get you one of the neck brace things for sleeping those work very well unless you have your own cabin then take your own pillow and maybe a blanket. take some snacks like chips candy something that you really like that will ease the pain of riding for that long.

  7. FIRST THING TO BRING IS MAYBE A LIGHT BLANKET IN COACH IT GETS A LITTLE COOL AT NIGHT. NEXT ARE YOU ARRIVING  AT YOUR DESTINATION AT NIGHT DAY,ETC. YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING A LIGHT JACKET.. ONE THE TRAIN YOU CAN BRING READING MATERIAL. OR SEWING ETC.  BUT YOU WILL FIND PEOPLE ARE QUITE TALKATIVE ON THE TRAIN YOU WILL FIND TOTAL STRANGERS WILL HAVE MANY FASCINATING THING TO TALK ABOUT. NOW THE TRAIN HAS A ROCKING MOTION LIKE YOUR MOTHERS ARMS WHEN YOU WERE A BABY DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOU FIND YOUR SELF TAKING MANY NAPS....BUT THE BEST THING GO TO THE LOUNGE CAR YOU WILL MEET PEOPLE  AND ALSO SEE FANTASTIC SCENERY..  ENJOY YOUR TRIP.

  8. Find out if there's hot or cold drinking water, and toilet paper, available in your carriage. If not you should bring them. And make sure your phone is fully charged, there might not be any sockets onboard.
