  1. NEEEEWWWW YORKKKKKKKK!!!!!!

    where dreams come true.

  2. I think New York City would make a wonderful trip for a family. There are "historic" places pretty close to the city, if you care to visit, but within New York itself . . . kid-oriented shows, science museums, the Statue of Liberty, the Staten Island Ferry. Really excellent city -- it's not really reflective of America, but it is a place many people go.

Cheap airfares? You can find them at ITA software -- it's a great site, and they will find the cheapest airfares for you. Then, you can go and negotiate with your local travel agent.

I found Fodor's website pretty good for general information, and they have a "Travel Talk" section for asking questions (kind of like Yahoo! Answers (-:).

Edit: just noticed the first answer was New York, too! See, people love New York! I was there for one magical summer . . . my favorite thing was Central Park, but I loved the ferry, and I really loved the subways.

  3. Go around New England and Eastern New York. You can fly to Boston or New York City, rent a car then go to the little towns along the way. You could visit Salem, Massachusetts (if you start off in Boston), parts of Cape Cod, Plymouth, Lexington, Concord, etc.

Or, if you go from New York City, you can go northward and see the stately homes along the Hudson River - Philipsburg Manor (an original Dutch/English landgrant) Kykuit (the Rockefeller Estate), Vanderbilt Mansion (the Vanderbilt Estate), Olana, Boscobel, Van Cortlandt Manor, Shadyside, Lyndhurst Castle, Equus Castle  (and a lot more)

You could visit various of the Revolutionary War sites along the way - Tappan and Stony Point being a good one. At Tappan you can eat at the '76 House, the oldest pub in Rockland County (founded circa 1700).  Also, the Hudson Valley is well known for its little rural villages, colonial Dutch and English history and its outdoors opportunities.
