the egg. this is because the animal that laid the egg was evolving so it wasn't really the chicken that laid the egg but more of another animal that eventually evolved into the chicken!

Don't say evolution because a dinosaur cannot lay an egg and suddenly out comes a chicken. Evolution takes thousands, maybe millions, of years. So only a chicken egg could only come from a chicken. Unless the egg in the question isn't a chicken egg, then eggs came first because animals have been laying eggs for millions of years, before chickens came in. Still, in between a dino and a chicken, there would be an egg. And that's how it would happen.
