when writing in iambic pentameter, does the last syllable in one line have to be different from the first syllable in the next line?

example: .....colors.

"ors" is unstressed.

[next line;] frozen....

"fro" is stressed. does it have to be like that?

or can it be two unstressed, or two stressed?

[[i don't care if my example is right or wrong, just trying to show you what i mean]] please help! its really important!

  1. I think so.

Let's analyse "London" by William Blake.

The first line: '...through chartered', in this, 'tered' is unstressed.

The second line: 'Near where...', in this, 'Near' is stressed.

So I believe that the syllable stressing has to alternate through the whole poem.

  2. Every line of iambic pentameter begins with an unstressed syllable and ends with a stressed one... because each metric foot is an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one, and all you do when you make the line is put five of those feet (iambs) together.
