Ian Baker-Finch says Tiger Woods felt cheated by Steve Williams
Ian Baker-Finch told in an interview on the American network CBS, during their coverage of the Canada Open, that Steve Williams revealed the reason behind him being dumped by Tiger Woods. He said that the former world number one sacked him for carrying Adam
Scott’s bag in US Open.
Finch, who once worked with Williams, claimed on national television that he knew the reason behind the split. He said that he and Williams shared a long time relationship, as Woods’ ex-buddy was once his caddie, before Williams left him for Greg Norman.
Hence, Williams shared his story with Finch and said that Woods felt, “he hadn't been loyal.”
“We've been talking over the last couple of years, and I think the toughest thing for Steve is that he thought he'd been extremely loyal with Tiger through all of the ups and downs over the last 18 months, and Tiger basically fired him the Sunday of the
AT&T, saying he felt he had not been loyal,” said Finch.
The story dates back to the US Open, in which Woods did not compete owing to his knee injury, but his caddie did. He collaborated with Adam Scott for a while, but with the permission of Woods.
However, Woods’ version was a bit different, as he did not want Williams to work for someone else. But by the time Woods revealed his desire, it was too late, as Williams had already had his name registered for the event. A similar situation was witnessed
at the AT&T, but Woods did not lose his cool and kept quiet about the issue. However, after the final round of the tournament, he called Williams and told him about his termination.
Finch believes that the caddie made the right choice as it was his right to move on, when Woods' was withdrawing from one event after the other.
“All good things come to an end, and maybe Tiger can also come back fresh. But I still think it was a wise move by Steve to move on,” he added.
Earlier, Williams came out and criticized Woods’ for his decision to fire him, citing it as untimely and shocking.
