Ian Burns, Michael Wasley, Sam Baird advance in 2012 Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers
Battle for booking a place in the initial round of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker event has started at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield as potters from around the world try their luck at the baize during the qualifying session of the Aussie
event. The first round of the qualifying session also includes the new rookies from World Snooker Qualifying School (Q School).
The first round of the qualifiers at the academy has brought good fortune for Ian Burns, Michael Wasley and Sam Baird as these three have made their way into the second round registering impressive victories over Sean O’Sullivan by the score line of 5-2,
Chen Zhe by 5-1 and Jamie O’Neill by 5-0 respectively.
In one of the first round encounters, the 2012 World Snooker Q School entrant, Burns faced a little resistance from his fellow Q School qualifier Sean O’Sullivan of England. Burns cruised into an easy victory over O’Sullivan by the score line of 5-2. O’Sullivan
failed to improvise in the first three frames as Burns hit some outstanding snooker breaks including a century clearance to lead 3-0.
The first session of the game finished with the dominance of Burns. However, O’Sullivan bounced back into the game in the second session with two frame victories but these two frame wins did not do any good to him because Burns clinched two more sets to
nudge him down by 5-2.
On the other hand, another Q school entrant, Michael Wasley, who failed to improvise in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker event qualifiers and crashed out of the tournament, made a superb start in the Aussie contest qualifiers.
He has begun his event campaign with a tremendous victory over the Chinese potter Chen Zhe by the score line of 5-1. Wasley fired some classy snooker shots including a half century break of 52 to ensure his victory over the Chinese cueman.
Meanwhile, Sam Baird also registered his first victory after he triumphed over Jamie O’Neill with a whitewash victory by the score line of 5-0. With the highest break of 86 points, Baird was able to hit the winning spot and book a place in the second round.
