http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Michael-Chappell-c63914 rates Lara higher than Tendulkar and Ponting – Cricket News Update
Former Australian captain, Ian Chappell, believes that the former West Indian captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377.
All three of them are considered as greats of the game and surely the top three batsmen of the modern era. Statistically, Tendulkar is far ahead than Lara and Ponting, as he has 99 international centuries, highest runs in Test cricket as well as the 50-over
format.
However, most cricket analysts believe that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chinnadupargea-Sachin-c50607 should have won more matches for his country and he usually scores his runs against weak bowling attacks on flat pitches.
Ponting on the other hand has been absolutely brilliant and has scored runs all around the world, in all conditions but has gone through a lean patch in the last two years.
Chappell feels that there is no doubt that Tendulkar and Ponting are great players but they seldom played big knocks. On the other hand, Lara has the record of the highest score in a Test innings and has scored a number of double centuries and two scores
of more than 300 in an innings. This is the reason why Chappell rates Lara higher than the other two because he could bat for long hours.
Former Australian captain said, “Lara is the world record-holder with a Test score of 400 and, next to Bradman, he’s the scorer of the largest centuries in Test cricket. That’s a remarkable feat, especially when you consider neither Tendulkar nor Ponting
has a triple century. This probably highlights an area where Lara is superior to the other two players under discussion; his knowledge of how to amass big scores.”
Chappell believes that the best thing about Lara was his ability to plan his innings according to the situation and was able to change gears while batting under different circumstances. There are few batsmen in the history of the game who could dominate
bowling attacks like the batsman from the Caribbean.
“He would score quickly in spurts and steadily at other times. Fully capitalising on this knowledge, he was able to achieve huge scores,” said Chappell.
