Ian Kennedy pitches to perfection as Arizona Diamondbacks beat Colorado Rockies 2-1 – MLB Update
The resurgent Arizona Diamondbacks continued their successful march and beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1 at Coors Field, Denver on Wednesday night, May 26.
The game would have been incomplete without the inspiring exploits of Ian Kennedy who threw eight virtually unplayable innings, while the in-form Chris Young hit the tie-breaking single to win the game.
Filled to capacity, the newly gained confidence and energy resulted in the second consecutive victory for the Diamondbacks in as many days. On Tuesday, May 24, the Diamondbacks effortlessly overcame Colorado 5-2.
On Wednesday, the game began as Jason Hammel pitched against Arizona Diamondbacks. The Colorado starting pitcher threw a scoreless inning followed by Ian Kennedy. Even though Kennedy barely made a good start as he gave up two hits in the very first inning,
he – afterwards – remained the dominant one among the pitchers.
Hammel gave up the first hit of his game in the third inning when Ryan Roberts singled to centre, but could not open the account for the Diamondbacks. In a game where the offence of both the teams was hardly comfortable with the rapidly increasing speed
of the pitchers, the crowd eagerly awaited for big hits.
Todd Helton succeeded in that, as he hit a sacrifice fly to left to score the first run for Colorado and got a lead on the Diamondbacks. Hammel did not falter to maintain the lead with his unplayable pitches up until the sixth inning.
Justin Upton was finally able to level the score in the sixth inning. Upton grounded out to short-stop to earn the first run for Arizona following Chris Young who struck the tie-breaking hit and singled to left, scoring the much-needed leading score.
Having secured a 2-1 lead, the Diamondbacks’ Ian Kennedy tossed pitches with more zeal. Inning after inning, he threw with a fast steady pace and kept the lead intact.
When J.J. Putz replaced Kennedy in the ninth and last inning, the Rockies’ hitters put their concerted efforts to change the map of game. Putz brought off success for the Diamondbacks by pitching a shut-out inning, giving 2-1 victory to his team.
