Ian Kennedy spotless as Arizona Diamondbacks topple New York Mets 4-3 – MLB Update
Ian Kennedy was yet again brilliant at the mound as the Arizona Diamondbacks overcame the New York Mets 4-3 after an intense tussle at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday, August 12.
Kennedy registered his 15th win for the season after pitching seven epic innings which saw him leak just one run amid six hits for the D-backs, who now extend their lead to two games over reigning world champions and rivals San Francisco Giants
in the National League West Division.
The Diamondbacks took early advantage in the game helped by a three-run second inning which gave them a lead that the Mets were never able to eradicate. Dillon Gee was unlucky for the Mets in this game as he went for four-expensive runs in his first two
innings which were enough for his fourth loss of the season.
The game started off in style as Arizona’s outfielder Justin Upton hammered Gee for a massive homer in the first inning before Xavier Nady and Sean Burroughs added to the score helped by Cody Ransom’s double to the left field. Kennedy shone at the plate
as his RBI effort helped Ransom to complete his run and impose a thumping four-run lead on the struggling Mets.
The Mets could reply only as late as the fifth inning when Angel Pagan added the first run for the Mets. Jason Bay and Scott Hairston added a run each in the eighth and the ninth inning respectively but their efforts were not enough to bring their team on
level with the D-backs.
The relievers did an excellent job for the Mets as they did not allow a single run in the three innings they pitched after five rough innings by Gee. However, David Hernandez and J.J. Putz improved their records for the Diamondbacks with the former holding
his 17th game for the season and the latter posting his 28th save this year.
The Diamondbacks lead the three-game series 1-0. It will be interesting to see how the Mets, who are without their star-player Jose Reyes, make a comeback in this series. The D-backs, on the contrary, would want a positive result from the series to ensure
them a berth for the playoffs.
