Ian Kinsler says he tried to make a play on the hit struck by Chipper Jones in All-Star Game-MLB
Watching Chipper Jones facing his final at-bat during the All-Star game was nothing short of a drama.
As soon as he slammed the hit, the second baseman Ian Kinsler came forward to make a play in order to tag him out. However, much to the surprise of everyone, Kinsler failed to make his ground to reach the ball, allowing Jones to manage a base-hit in the
process.
Soon after the game, questions were asked to Kinsler about what happened with him and about why he stopped for a while and then grabbed the ball. Few baseball writers believe that he may have done this out of respect, in order to help Jones leave his last
game with the privilege of having struck a base-hit.
However, Kinsler has denied this plainly, explaining that he made an attempt but since the ball was little far away, he struggled to get there. Furthermore, he calls himself a kind of fielder who cannot be acrobatic on the field. Showing speed and catching
the ball immediately after it has been hit have been difficult for him in the past, he maintains.
Meanwhile, Jones also refuses to admit that there was anything being offered to him while he connected the hit and that he purely deserves the credit for it. Furthermore, on being inquired about why he was smiling after reaching the base, he explained.
“I knew that when I turned around I was going to see (Derek) Jeter and Adam Dunn on the top step laughing at me for busting down the line trying to beat that out,” Jones said. “True to form, they were giving me guff.”
At the same time, Kinsler elaborates his inability to grab the ball during the game in following words.
“I felt like I had cement blocks on my feet,” Kinsler said. “I wasn’t the quickest and most nimble on my feet at that moment.”
Jones commands a great respect in baseball arena. Therefore, if a baseball writer believes that he may have been honoured in the game, he cannot be entirely wrong.
However, since explanations have come from both the players, things have been made clear now.
