Ian Lenagan of Wigan Warriors says more players from union should join league
Wigan Warriors’ Chairman, Ian Lenagan, said that they need to attract players from the alternate code of rugby in order to sustain their premier position within the league tables.
While recalling the popular tradition of cross-signing within league teams, it was mentioned by the Wigan’s chief that contrary to the old ways, the trend has entirely taken up an upstream trend, referring to the very recent signings of Jason Robinson and
Chris Ashton to union sides.
While speaking about the future trends in terms of cross-signing between the alternate codes of rugby, Wigan’s chief stated, "I see a future where we have a lot of movement in both directions. I've the greatest of respect for rugby union, but it has become
such a technical game that you need giants in the forwards. There are plenty of players out there who would be better suited to rugby league. It's just a matter of getting out and finding them."
According to Lenagan, rugby union is full of players who will effeciently fulfil the demands of league games. He believes the technical aspect of union has forced certain type of players to be suitable for position which leaves other players much better
in league.
The Wigan’s chief was reigned in for his current position back in 2008 and took the club to newer heights both in terms of financial progress and in a leading position on the tables. He acknowledged that there needs to be a constant influx of quality players
in order to sustain their top spot.
While acknowledging the exceptional performance profile of Sam Tomkins, Wigan’s chief admitted that Tomkins has the surpassed his expectations in terms of performance very quickly. He labelled the player as a jewel for his outfit, comparing his stature with
that of Darren Lockyer and Billy Slater.
Comparing Tomkins to the other players in the world of rugby, Wigan’s chief categorised Tomkins along with Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards and Alex Murphy- the legends in the world of rugby.
