Ian Poulter: Tiger woods shouldn't play at the Open Championship
World number 16 Ian Poulter has advised Tiger Woods to skip the 140th Open Championship and focus more on his recovery process before returning to the golf course. The Englishman showed confidence in former world number one and was certain that
Woods would make a strong comeback very soon and would pose a powerful threat to the rest of the golfers.
Poulter expressed his views while addressing the press on Monday, “He won’t play and he probably shouldn’t play. To be honest, all he needs to do is get himself fit. If he comes back too early, he is going to be back out of the game for a while. He has been
so good for golf that I think everybody would like to see him fit, healthy and where he can just play with no injuries.”
“I don’t think he should pressurise himself and I am sure he won’t. He will come back when he’s ready,” he added.
The 35-year-old added that if he were in Woods’ shoes, he would have taken a year off to recover completely. Poulter was sure that even if Woods retrieved half the form he once had, he would rocket back into the top. Poulter gave these comments in response
to the questions thrown by the press towards all of Wood' opponents.
Woods withdrew from the US Open, which took place at the Congressional Country Club in June. The player is now thinking whether to compete in the Open Championship or not, which is the third major of the season. Woods withdrew from the US Open owing to the
knee injury that he sustained during the final round of the 2011 Masters.
The 14-major winner has time until Tuesday to decide whether he will compete in the 140th edition of the Open Championship, which will start from July 14 at the Royal St George.
Poulter however, will be competing with the rest of the field for the event, and will be hoping to clinch his first major of the season, The Open Championship.
