Ian Poulter and Martin Laird share opening-round lead at the Players Championship - Golf News
Ian Poulter fired a seven-under par 65 in the opening round of the Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass to share the lead with Martin Laird on Thursday, May 10, 2012.
He carded three birdies and a lone bogey on the front nine to go two-under. It was his back-nine performance that took him to the top, as he started off with three consecutive birdies starting from the 10th hole.
He then made three par putts followed by another two birdies on the 16th and 17th hole, which was enough for the first round lead.
According to him, he would have done a little better if he had made use of the eagle chances that he received during the front nine. Yet, he believes that it was one of the best rounds he has ever played in his career.
“It was a very, very good round of golf,” he said. “That's definitely probably in the top 10 of the rounds of golf I've ever played. To turn around and say, that you're going to walk off 7-under par a little bit disappointed, but if I look at the chances
I had on the front nine, that could have easily been a few more”.
In the meantime, Laird also joined him on the top with the help of bogey free round of seven-under. He managed to record a total of seven birdies.
Laird said that he should have made use of the fairways, as some of his shots did not find the green when chipped from there.
"Any time you go around this golf course bogey-free is obviously a very good day," laird said. "I missed a few greens out there from good spots in the middle of the fairways but managed to scramble really well and chipped them up close enough".
Despite a great run of five consecutive birdies starting from the fifth hole, Blake Adams did not manage to finish on top of the leaderboard.
He carded a total of eight birdies against two bogeys to take the third place with a six-under par 66 opening-round score.
