Ian Poulter defeats John Senden in the first round of the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Ian Poulter made an impressive start in the first round of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, defeating John Senden.
Poulter displayed an amazing performance and took an early lead at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
The 36-year-old English professional golfer made two pars on the 1st and 2nd hole, grabbing the lead on the 3rd hole, by making a long-yard birdie.
Then he shot five consecutive pars and shot another birdie on the 9th hole. He was so confident to scoring and desired to finish on the top.
He improved his performance from the 12th hole and made the most appealing birdie. He finished the round amazingly, by scoring the last birdie on the 15th hole.
Poulter defeated Senden, who made only one birdie throughout the first round finished three strokes behind.
“Tom’s a great player as he showed when leading the Open last year as an amateur and then when winning his third event as a pro [at the Portuguese Masters in 2011.” Poulter said. “But he’s very, very shy and quiet. That to me is what he needs to change.
He added: “He’s kind of in that cloud in the background. He’s a winner and when he comes out of that box he’ll be great. He should be confident and walk with his chest out and go win some more golf tournaments”.
Last year, Poulter defeated Luke Donald by one-stroke margin and won the title of the European Tours’ Volvo World Match Play Championship amazingly.
He is delivering his best performance in Spain and hopeful to grab a lead again. His impressive performance in the first round is likely to benefit him in the next rounds as well.
Poulter is in Pool Player group. Tom Lewis is also in the group and will face both the players one-by-one. The game will be more appealing from the second round, as Lewis is gearing up to defeat both the players and start dominating the group.
The upcoming round will be tougher and harder. Poulter has to show some extra efforts against Lewis, so that he can be impressive till the end of the day.
