Ian Poulter eliminated, Alvaro Quiros moves up in the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Ian Poulter was eliminated in the third round of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, as he was unable to defend his title till the fourth round.
The 36-year-old Englishman sought to defend his title before the event. However, in the initial two rounds, he displayed an amazing performance.
He faced a 4 and 3 loss to Alvaro Quiros on Saturday, at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
“Hot bath, bag of ice for the ankle as the cart lady decided to crush it with her front wheel,” Poulter posted on Twitter. “I don't need excuses. I had plenty of chances and didn't take them - simple. I just didn't play good enough”.
Last year, Poulter recorded his first win at the European Tour event.  He defeated Luke Donald by a one-point lead and was the most impressive player of the tournament.
In the current edition, he started the round early on Saturday. He was on the top seed for having enough knowledge of the tournament.
He faced John Senden in the first round and defeated him by recording enormous scores. He was on the top of the leaderboard on Thursday and was also leading against rivals.
Then in the second round, he played in the afternoon session and cheered the spectators and his fans for showing a good performance.
He defeated Tom Lewis and maintained his group domination again. His one-point lead took him towards the win and he successfully moved to the third round.
Poulter teed off against Alvaro Quiros on Saturday. Poulter faced a tough time while scoring against the 29-year-old Spanish professional.
The Spaniard was simply amazing on his home course. He competed well against the Englishman. Their round was superb and all the spectators were anxiously waiting for the results.
The results were in favour of Quiros while Poulter faced elimination from the European Tour event. Most of the viewers felt sad for the defending champion’s elimination.
"Ian is always a difficult guy to beat, even when he's not playing at his best. The thing I'm most happy about is keeping myself together," Quiros said.
Now, the final round will be held without the defending champion, meaning there will be a new champion on Sunday.
