Ian Poulter emerges in the second round of Ballantine’s Championship to stay in contention
Ian Poulter recovered from a disappointing slump of three-over, 75 on the opening day and carded a brilliant five-under, 67 on the second to stay in contention for the €2,205,000 Ballantine’s Championship on Friday, April 27.
The Englishman, who is part of the grizzled field at this week’s event, is hoping to bag the title and has done well since the start of the season in several events around the world.
Tough windy conditions on the opening day saw many of the high-profile players falling for high scores and the play was suspended for a brief time later in the evening.
Poulter is still hopeful of making it to the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, much the same way Lee Westwood did last year.
Poulter said, "I generally played pretty solid golf, I like it windy which is exactly what we got yesterday and I never took advantage at all. I hit a couple of poor shots and three three-putts put me three-over for the day. Westy made the cut on the number
last year and went on to win. So I'm certainly not going to be sitting back”.
Poulter took advantage of a relatively calm day on Friday and pulled in a brilliant round which included six birdies and just one bogey through the 18-hole stretch.
He added, "It's about going out there and making as many birdies as I can, and this golf course gives it up on the par fives. Certainly you have to take advantage of those”.
Austrian Bernd Wiesberger surged to the top of the leaderboard on the second day, scoring a stunning seven-under, 65.
The young golfer is looking for his maiden victory on the European Tour and is hoping to bag the title here in Korea.
Poulter, one of the top-ranked Englishmen in the field, is coming out of a strong form, with a joint third at Bay Hill and an outright seventh at the Masters.
His clothing brand Ian Poulter Design (IJP) is also the official apparel of the event, which provides another impetus to the Englishman to bag the title.
Poulter is currently ranked 25th on the Official World Golf Rankings.
