Ian Poulter performing well at the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Ian Poulter is performing well at the Volvo World Match Play Championship, as he shot four birdies in the first round.
The first round of the European Tour tournament has finished. Brandt Snedeker, Paul Lawrie, Sergio Garcia, Graeme Mcdowell, Justin Rose and Rafael Cabrera-Bello are joining Poulter in the proud winning squad on Thursday.
"I like the pressure of you have to hole a putt to win the hole or halve the hole or you have to hole to make your opponent hole his. It's pretty cut-throat. You have to do something - it's black and white. If you miss you lose the hole. Dead simple," Poulter
said.
Poulter looks to defend his title at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain. On the other hand, he is also eyeing the Ryder Cup, set to be staged in September this year. He desires to make it to the European Team of the mega event.
He added: "It's important for me to have a big week this week. I want to make the side more than ever - Ollie (Jose Maria Olazabal) is going to be an incredible captain. I have a time-frame and a number of events which I need to play well in to make the
side. I'm fully aware of what I do".
He played the first round against John Senden. Poulter made an early start and competed well till the end of the day. He shot four birdies in total and was under par on the 3rd, 9th, 12th and 15th hole respectively.
In return, Senden only carded one birdie throughout the day and faced difficulty while scoring. He was impressive in the 14th hole and shot 15 pars in total.
He finished three strokes behind Poulter and lost the first round. Now, Poulter is leading the group by 2 points and will play against in the second round.
Lewis is a new lad. He turned professional in 2011 and has less experience when compared with Poulter. Tt will not be that hard to play against him. However, he can be tough in Spain.
Poulter, the 11-time European Tour winner, is defending his title in an impressive way. He only needs to deliver more under par scores, so that his opponents cannot defeat him.
