Ian Poulter, the defending champion of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, has arrived in Spain with an aim record a victory.
The 36-year-old Englishman is in the field of the European Tour event, and is gearing up to win back the title at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
Last year, he defeated English Luke Donald and recorded the debut win at the tournament. He was the most appealing player of the four-day event and now desires to attract more attention, in a battle set to start from May 17 to 20, 2012
This will be the 47th edition of the mega event. Poulter will face tough rivals and title contenders. Among them, 24 are the global stars and they are from 13 different countries.
Poulter is planning to grab the lead and defeat all other professionals of the field. He aims to score well and is also hoping to win by a great margin.
Since May 2011, he has not recorded any other professional win, both on the PGA Tour and the European Tour.
On the other hand, Poulter has not played any European Tour event in the current year. He was on the PGA Tour and was impressive in four tournaments.
He finished third at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard. He finished 7th position at the Masters Tournament, which is his most impressive result for the year so far.
There are ample chances for the Englishman to win back the Volvo title. He can also end his winning drought and be the proud winner of the tournament again.
"I love the cut and thrust of match play and find it a refreshing change from the usual stroke play format we play week in week out on the Tours," said Poulter.
"The fact it is Ryder Cup year, and I think, it will make it (the Volvo Match Play) even more exciting with every match from the group stages to the final giving a chance to all aspiring team members to impress Captain Olazábal before Medinah".
Poulter also wants to be in the field of the Ryder Cup European Team. For that, he has to improve his ranking and points on the table. If he wins the Volvo World Match Play Championship, he will definitely play the Ryder Cup in September.
