Ian Poulter tweets to ridicule Colin Montgomerie’s design
English golfer, Ian Poulter bluntly opined about the Royal Golf Course. The player is strongly against the Colin Montgomerie designed course where the Volvo Golf Champions is taking place. Posting a level par in the opening round,
Poulter took out his frustration on the course and its poor design. Being the most outspoken golfer, Poulter did not hesitate before he publicly ridiculed his previous Ryder Cup captain.
Ian stated the following on a social networking website, "Played great today 35 putts, missed one green. Simply the worst greens I have ever seen and I'm not joking. They are embarrassing," he wrote. "Apparently the Architect wanted
to make a statement with the greens. He did that alright – they are &%$£."
Ian is known to speak his mind about whatever he does not find appropriate. Not being on very good terms with Montgomerie from before, Poulter certainly was aware that the architect of the course was Colin. Ian and Colin have had
hard feelings for each other since the 2008 Ryder Cup when Poulter was added to the team instead of Montgomerie by the then captain, Nick Faldo. Colin had led the victorious European Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor in Wales in October 2010.
Ian was not in favour of the course even before the tournament began. Before the Volvo Golf Champions commenced, Poulter commented about the mounded shape of the greens. The player said that the Archaeologists would have a field
day since there are Elephant and Dinosaur remains buried under every green. Being really good at sarcasm, Poulter carded three birdies and three bogeys and had the same score as the designer himself.
Also posting a 72 in the opening round, Monty was aware of the criticism coming his way about the course since another player, Paul Casey, talked about the complexity of the course. Casey predicated that Montgomerie would be ridiculed
due to the intense slopes of the course. Paul said that Monty knows he has a target on him and that they (the players) will not be very hard on him.
Obviously, Poulter did not agree with the latter half of the statement.
