Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin wins RS200 SEAS Open championship at Burghfield Sailing Club
Host club’s Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin put up an impressive sailing show in front of the crowd gathered at the Burghfield Sailing Club to take the 2011 RS200 SEAS Open sailing championship glory. The pair secured two top podiums along with a third in three
races of the event and clinched the championship title with two points at the conclusion of the event.
Opening day of the RS200 SEAS Open presented pond sailing at its most thrilling and entertaining peak. The 34-boat competitive fleet comprised of some seasoned circuit and SEAS traveller sailors including a couple of new faces, who tagged along and started
sailing under sunny start of the day.
Later in the day, weather conditions over the racing area became quite challenging and were testing sailors’ tactics with heavy gusts and tricky shifts. The forecast really pushed the fleet to the limits but they eventually made it in the end.
Burghfield Sailing Club’s Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin managed to win the rum by impressive consistent  performances grabbing 1, 2, 1 followed by Matt Mee and Emma Norris of Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club on second podium finish. The Red Wharf Bay duo took 3,
1, 4 after a convening finish on Burghfield waters, as they were able to cling to the top three spots.
Another local pair, Dave Steed and Katharine Lovering, enjoyed a bit of luck catching third place. The duo finished the first race with a large number conclusion at 18th spot along with a ninth and second in the next two races. Luckily, due to
one discard in the event standings, Steed and Lovering managed to hit the third position in the end.
