Ian Thorpe focusing to qualify for freestyle relay events at the 2012 Olympic Games – Swimming News
Five-time Olympic gold medallist, Ian Thorpe, has said that he will be attempting to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games, by securing his spots in the 4*100m freestyle and the 4*200m freestyle relay events.
Rumours have been spreading in the swimming world that the 28-year-old Australian will be targeting the 100m, 200m and the 400m freestyle events to secure his berth in the Australian swimming team which will compete in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Thorpe failed to occupy the podium at international meets after the 2004 Athens Olympics and retired from competitive swimming in 2006. He then returned to international swimming in February 2011, saying that he will attempt to confirm his spot in
the Australian elite swimming squad by dominating the shorter distance events.
Thorpe has hired a legendary Russian Coach, Gennadi Touretski to mend his swimming career for the upcoming Olympic Games. The Australian has been training with his new coach for almost two months now and has returned to his homeland, to join the swimming
squad of Australian elites in Sydney.
Ian was expected to train for the individual 100m freestyle and the 200m freestyle events, but the Australian has now confirmed that his primary goal is to secure his spot in the Australian relay teams.
The Australian swimmier added that he has had little time to prepare and in his four years retirement span, swimmers have considerably improved their timings. The Australian come-back king said that he is comfortable with his rapid progress but he
cannot dream of dominating the current champions of elite sports. Thorpe also mentioned that his main objective is to find his spot in the relay events, whereas, his secondary goal will be to represent his nation in the individual events.
The champion expressed his excitement and said that the relay events will be very competitive at these Olympics and he will be giving his best shot to attain a spot in the competition. Thorpe also said that he will resume competitive swimming immediately
after the ban imposed on him expires and will be trying to impress his fans at the up-coming swimming competitions.
