Ian Wheeler wins Men’s 200m freestyle title: Day three – 2011 USA Swimming Sectionals, Mount Hood
Ian Wheeler of Kamehameha Swim won the title of Men’s 200m freestyle meet on the third day of the 2011 USA Swimming Sectionals in Mount Hood, Oregon, on Thursday, July 21.
The 19-year-old Wheeler claimed the gold medal of the event in a noteworthy time of 1 minute and 53.45 seconds. His time was 10.49 seconds behind the world mark of 1 minute and 42.96 seconds, made by Michael Phelps of USA during 2008. In addition, he missed
the meet record of 1 minute and 50.26 seconds, set by Ryk Neethling of THSC-OR in March 2004.
He was followed by Jacob M Pebley of Corvallis Aquatics, who stayed only 0.13 seconds behind Wheeler and clocked a time of 1 minute and 53.58 seconds. The 17-year-old Pebley was in a comfortable lead of 1.96 seconds over his following swimmer, Ryan F Dignan
of Sun Devil Aquatics, who followed him on the podium for the bronze medal, with a timing of 1 minute and 55.54 seconds.
His time was only 0.04 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Jeff B Garnier of Foothills Swim T, who posted a fourth fastest time of 1 minute and 55.58 seconds. Garnier was just 0.25 seconds faster than his following swimmer, Cole W Puchi of Tucson Ford
Deal, who submitted an effort of 1 minute and 55.83 seconds for fifth position. He stayed 0.50 seconds away from his closest competitor, Cameron Stitt of Tualatin Hills S, who completed his swim in a sixth fastest time of 1 minute and 56.23 seconds.
Clark P Smith of Denver Swim Academy finished his swim in the seventh fastest place, with a timing of 1 minute and 56.37 seconds. He was followed by Robert D Miner of Wasatch Front Fi, who secured the eighth position by reporting in a time of 1 minute and
56.64 seconds.
Furthermore, the winners received medals after the completion of the day’s session, while the arena appreciated the tremendous efforts of all participants, who tried to secure podium finishes in the 200m event.
