Ian White out with fracture, Detroit Red Wings recall Brendan Smith as replacement -NHL News Update
Veteran Detroit defenseman, Ian White, made a daring move when he launched face first in front of a moving puck to block a shot and help lead his team to a, 5-2, victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday, November 12, 2011, but it did have its consequences.
White had to not only eject himself out of the game with a bloody face but also learned after having tests done on his face that he had fractured his cheekbone, which would require him to miss at the least 1-2 weeks or more if advised by the doctors.
“The guy’s got a lot of guts to throw his face like that in front of the puck”, Detroit goalie, Jimmy Howard, said.
In order to replace him until he is able to make a comeback, the Detroit Red Wings have recalled 22-year-old defenseman, Brendan Smith, from their farm club in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Grand Rapid Griffins, on Monday morning, November 14, 2011.
White is a new addition on the Detroit Red Wings line-up this season as he spent the last with the Carolina Hurricanes and was traded after playing 39 games to the San Jose Sharks.
"I think Whitey's been an excellent addition for us, adding a right hand shot on the power play", Detroit captain, Nicklas Lidstrom, said. "He works real hard in his own zone and he's very competitive, which you saw on the play when he got the puck in the
face”.
At the moment, White has played in all 15 matchups with Detroit Red Wings ever since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicked off and has seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) for a plus-minus rating of eight and six minutes in penalty
time for the team.
Clearly, White will not be participating with the team during their four-game road trip, starting off against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, and will also not be travelling with them either.
The former 191st overall draft pick during round-six of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by Toronto Maple Leafs, might just be able to make his post-injury debut in their home matchup against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday, November 23, 2011.
