Ian Woosnam falters in final moments to finish tied third at Speedy Services Wales Open – Golf news
Ian Woosnam missed out on a chance of recording the fifth European Senior Tour of his career, when he faltered for a four-over 75 in the final round of the Speedy Services Wales Open and finished tied for the third position last week.
The local favourite led each of the first two rounds at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, before losing momentum on Sunday – he conceded two double bogeys and a bogey, while adding just one shot to his scorecard.
Woosnam started his final round campaign on a decent note, as he parred each of the first eight holes that he played. Thereafter, he lost two shots on the ninth hole and reached the turn in two-over.
The back nine of the course witnessed him starting with three pars, followed by a double bogey and a bogey on the 13th and the 14th hole, respectively. He then tried to make a comeback by carding a birdie on the 15th hole.
However, it was not enough, as Philip Golding had already cemented his position on top of the leaderboard, courtesy of a five-under par score.
Talking to the European Senior Tour’s official website, he expressed his disappointment in performing poorly in the final round. According to him, the conditions were really favourable on Saturday for his style of playing.
However, the conditions suddenly changed on Sunday and Welshman failed to keep the momentum going and finished three strokes behind the Golding, the eventual winner.
“It was tough in those conditions and I think yesterday really knocked all the rhythm out of my swing. The wind was so strong yesterday and then today the conditions were tough and I just couldn’t get it going,” he said.
“I was still in it after the double on the ninth and I was trying to get back up that leaderboard but I just couldn’t find the momentum today. You have to take you hat off to Phil though – to shoot 66 in the final round in those conditions was pretty special
and he deserves his win all right,” he added.
The defending champion Barry Lane, in the meantime, managed to record a one-under par 70 in the final round and shared the third position with Woosnam and the PGA champ Andrew Oldcorn.
David J Russell, on the other hand, recorded three birdies against as many bogeys to finish with an even par tournament score and finished second on the leaderboard.
