Ibm t40 laptop screen

Question

when I turn on my laptop the screen comes on properly the gets soo dim you can barley make out that there is still something on it. if you close and open the laptop several times the screen flashes everytime its opend and eventualy it decides to work. I tried hooking up an external monitor while the screen wasnt working and it worked properly. do I need a new screen?
