Ibrahimovic denies Milan over-abundant in attack
AC Milan's recent signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic has stated his wish to play attacking football with the Italian team during the coming season.
Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who owns the club, delighted its fans by signing Ibrahimovic from Barcelona and Manchester City forward Robinho during the recent transfer window.
The new signings leave manager Massimiliano Allegri with plenty of attacking options, as the two new strikers will compete with Brazilian internationals Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato for a place in the starting eleven.
In addition, veteran goalscorer Filippo Inzaghi remains at the club. Inzaghi scored a mouthwatering volley against Barcelona during the pre-season, showing the form of a top-level striker.
Four strikers a possibility
When asked by Gazzeto dello Sport whether there was an over-abundance of world class strikers at Milan, Ibrahimovic refuted the claim.
"Attack is always the best defence, that is my philosophy," the Swede said, claiming that four striker may not prove excess. "Of course we can [play with four strikers], it works very well in my national team. I don't know what tactical line-up we will play with but I believe this one would be a valid one."
Milan in need of trophies
Robinho and Ibrahimovic join a club desperate for trophies that collected its last piece of silverware in the 2007 Champions League final.
Since then, the club has enjoyed little success in Europe, being knocked out in the round of 16 twice and appearing only in the UEFA Cup, now called the Europa League, in 2008–2009.
Milan's ambition to revert to its old form in Europe will suit Ibrahimovic well, as the striker has failed to win the Champions League title despite several attempts at various clubs.
Milan's new number 11 could make his league debut this Saturday, when the team travels to face Cesena. If he is picked, that is.
