Ice Skating tips?

I haven't been ice skating since I was 8, but today I went skating with some friends. I have no problem with balance and I'm not scared of the ice, falling, or slipping. But I'm having the same problems as I had when I was 8 and back then I used to skate much, much more. Usually, I appear to be walking rather than skating, but when I try skating properly, my ankles bend inwards, my blades become angled outwards, and my feet spread out to the sides <-- that's when I slip.

How should I move my legs and place my feet so I can stop this walking on ice business and actually skate? I just can't seem to get it right

  1. It's hard when you don't skate that often to get the hang of it. Try pushing off with one foot, make your feet like a T with one foot sideways behind the other and push off with the sideways foot. You can glide like that, and you feel what it's like to push off. Try to figure out how to do that with both feet but not quite sideways? And tightening your laces mught help, but you probably just have weak ankles. Skating more will help.

  2. If your ankles bend in, perhaps you need to tighten the laces?

  3. there are many things that could be causing this. for one, you might not hav ur skates on tight enough, which is causing ur ankles to go inward. Second, try to make ur feet go down straight on the ice, or even practice moving ur ankles outward just a littlebit, so that u may b able 2 balance easier.

  4. I am a figure skater and I am guessing that your skates aren't fitting right. If you get them too big that can really affect how you skate. Try to tighten the laces that might help. Another thing is it might take a while to learn how to skate without that problem. Instead of your walking on the ice just move one foot at a time and glide on it. It might take time but you eventually get the hang of it.

  5. A Few tips for skating on your inside edge:

1.Pretend that you have no boot and that your skate it attached to your bare foot. The boot does some work but you also have to flex your ankles and keep them strong.

2.Also, pretend that there is a metal pole going through your knee, shin, ankle and foot and try to keep them all lined up.

Alot has to do with your ankle strength - the more you skate, the better you get. It is good that you have asked for advice now instead of picking up bad habits - well done!
