  1. I skate once a week, and usually after a couple of months I can feel that my blades need sharpening. I usually ask my coach for her opinion however. I usually get mine sharpened every 2-3 months or so, but if you skate more regularly than this your blades will need to be sharpened much more regularly. If you skate everyday, I would suggest that your skates would need to be sharpened every month. If in doubt, ask someone experienced at your local ice rink for their opinion.

How often you change your skates is definitely your own opinion and choice to be honest.

Make sure you give your skates a good check over:

Are the blades in good condition?

Are your skates too small/ uncomfortable (depending on if you feet are still growing)?

Is the leather becoming worn/ quite dirty?

Are your laces still in good condition?

Is the lining and inner sole of your skates become worn/ thin, or quite dirty?

Are your skates becoming generally less supportive around the ankle/ do you feel you want better ankle support?

If your answer is yes to many of the above, I would suggest investing in a good quality pair of brand new skates, as paying slightly more for better quality will mean your skates will last a lot longer, and you will definitely be able to feel the difference.

  2. Get the specialist who works at the rink to help as it all depends on the condition of the ice and the area around the ice pad
