Ice cream helped Maria Sharapova to absorb the semi-final defeat at US Open 2012 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, was the victim of yet another defeat at the hands of the top seeded Belarusian superstar, Victoria Azarenka, in the semi-final of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Flushing Meadows, New York.
It was a demanding match and she was leading after the end of the first set but couldn’t handle the onslaught of her rival in the following two battles and lost the encounter. She was very agonized by the defeat and her expressions
during the last few moments were clearly depicting the anguish. Despite smashing barrage of winners, she was tied down by her own unforced errors that were almost three times of her opponent.
However, the Russian blonde stepped out of the Arthur Ashe and went straight to buy an ice cream that cooled her down. She commented, "I'm looking forward to checking out the ice cream truck that's around the corner from my hotel.
Vanilla with rainbow sprinkles. It has been haunting me. I'm telling the driver, like, 'Get out of here. I can't look at you anymore.' So I'll have time for that."
Sharapova has definitely established herself as a professional and absorbing cruel defeats is the main lesson taught to the athletes. She had a few problems earlier on in the starting phase of her career; used to overreact to the
situations but recently she has mould herself to tone down and accept whatever comes her way.
Talking about that, the 25-year-old Russian confessed, "In the last few years, especially after my injury, I have been a lot better about accepting wins and accepting losses. I try to think that if you're level-headed about difficult
defeats and then if you get something in your career that's incredible, you take it in a calm way, then the defeats don't seem as difficult."
World number three, Sharapova, has definitely groomed into a better player this year. She won the French Open Championship at Paris to complete her Career Slam and almost rounded off the grass court season with an Olympics gold
medal but the American legendary tennis icon, Serena Williams, stood in her way and denied her from becoming the second ever woman in the history of sporting tennis to complete a Career Gold Slam; first being the beautiful wife of Andre Aggasi, Steffi Graff.
She is confirmed for a spot in the season-end finale at Istanbul which can be another mouth-watering event and possibly a revenge mission for the Russian.
