Question:

Ice skating and knee pain?

I get knee pain if I ice skate more than 10 min. I am trying to find out why.

My knees are usually sensitive to type of shoe I wear. If I put on soccer shoes with spikes my knees hurt. Even if I put on Diesel shoes with little spike for more than 3 hrs they would hurt. But if I wear the running shoes like Asics , I can stand / walk for hours without any pain. Just like the spike on the soccer shoe , the blade on the bottom of the ice skate might be the cause of pain. I want to ice skate for couple of hours at a stretch.

Has someone experienced this kind of issue ?

Any advice on how to get rid of this knee pain while ice skating.?

  1. i don't get knee pain really cause my knees are pretty screwed up so i don't often notice pain its usually my feet that start to burn but maybe try insoles and even though not recommended maybe thick socks with the insoles if this dont work maybe skates with 2 blades that are usually used by kids when learning but i dont know if they are available to adults

  2. you could try to put some padding in the ice skate

  3. Well I never got knee pain ice skating.

I think you shouldn't put pressure on it.

If you lift  your foot on skates if has pressure.

Don't fall on your knees either. fall on your butt.

Othereview your knee can get damaged,.

  4. The cold bothers my knees from cheer leading so many years ago I've got arthritic in my knees .I take aleve and wear knee pads to hold my knees in place  Maybe you should try this and see if it helps. I love to Ice skate and I know it would be awful if I couldn't do it. Even if your young it still could be arthritic and the cold weather could aggravate your knees If you played ball or any sports in school. It could be the skates so try wearing the knee pads you can purchase the pads at any drug store .I think this could possible help you......I hope so.....

  5. i get it too

its becasue the blade on the skate is soo small that it putsa  lot of pressure on a certian part of your foot.

  6. If you experience a lot of knee pain, you might want to get it checked by a doctor - just to be on the safe side.  If it happens to be something serious, you don't want to make the condition worse!

Strengthening your quad muscles and hamstrings should help your knee, afterall, they control your knee movement and stability.  But there are other muscle groups that affect the knee as well.  Here is a link to knee info and exercising:

Here are other knee exercises, specifically for skating

When you do anything that require you to bend your knees, that knee should be aligned with the top of your foot (meaning the kneecap should point straight ahead over the foot).  Otherwise injury can occur.  Most people don't realize they have improper body alignment.

If you have flat feet or high arches, that can cause knee stress as well.  This may be why certain shoes feel better to you too.  You might get your foot checked out . . . orthodics may help.  Remember a figure skate has a heel - which may be making a difference too.

Knee pain can be any number of things.  A sure way to get rid of the pain would be to figure out what the cause is . . . so get checked by a doctor first if possible (you don't want to end up with chronic knee pain!).

Just my 2 cents.  Hope you find the culprit!

  7. I used to have knee issues while skating because of the jumping that I was doing.  If jumping isn't your issue, then I would say that it's probably the skates.  You might need some sort of insert in there to help support your arch or something?
