Tonya Harding's husband at the time, Jeff Gillooly, hired/conspired with Shawn Eckhardt, Shane Stant and Derrick B Smith to injure teammate/rival Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 US National Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, which was also where the Olympic team would be selected. Stant used an asp (a collapsible wand) to hit Kerrigan as she was being interviewed backstage on her knee and escape with Smith as his getaway driver. Gillooly provided Kerrigan's schedule (not to mention also providing the motive) and Eckhardt recruited Stant and Smith. The injury caused Kerrigan to withdraw from the competition.

Fortunately, Kerrigan recovered in time to be voted onto the Olympic team, ultimately winning the silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Harding also skated at those Olympics and finished 8th. Once her connection to the attacker was revealed, Harding's win at that 1994 Nationals was stripped of her and officially deemed "Vacant" by the United States Figure Skating Association.  They also banned Harding from all competitions and coaching sanctioned by the USFSA.  

All four men were sent to prison for their roles in the attack and Harding was given probation and community service for lying to investigators after the attack. Harding now claims in her recent book, "The Tonya Tapes", that Gillooly threatened to kill her if she revealed the plot to the authorities. Gillooly, who has since changed his name to Jeff Stone, denies the accusation.

Shawn Eckhart passed away late last year. Shane Stant had his request to expunge his conviction rejected in 2005. Derrick B Smith faded from public view once he was released from prison.
