Ok so.... Icebergs are pieces of ice floating in the ocean. They have a bottom and its possible to go below an iceberg from one side and emerge on the other side i.e. u can swim under an iceberg.

Whereas Islands are part of the planet and has no bottom. The land mass just extends below all the way to the Earth's core.

Please correct any mistakes in the above paragraphs...they are what I understand about Islands and Icebergs.

So here are my questions :

Can the combined land mass of South America, Mexico, North America (USA), Canada and alaska be considered an Island ?

How about the combined land mass of Africa, Europe, Asia and The Russian Federation ?

I apologize for the length of this ridiculously long question.

  1. Your paragraph is basically right.

The definition of an island vs. continent is pretty arbitrary. Basically, if its big enough, its a continent, if not its an island.

Technically, if it comprises its own continental/tectonic plate, its a continent and if not its an island, but there are many islands that are just extensions of other continental/tectonic plates, like britain and europe, but its traditionally been considered an island, so its still called that.

If you want to call those landmasses islands, go ahead.

  2. An island (IPA: /ˈaɪlənd/) or isle (/ˈaɪl/) is any piece of land that is completely surrounded by water in two dimensions, above high tide, and isolated from other significant landmasses

this could mean that in addition to the americas being an island, africa itself is an island and eurasia is a separate island
