Iceland International 2011: Mathias Borg beats Tony Stephenson to claim Men’s Singles title
Sweden’s Mathias Borg has proved his mettle as he claimed Men’s Singles title after beating Tony Stephenson of Ireland in the final of the Iceland International 2011, on Sunday, November 13, in Iceland.
Borg has improved a lot in all aspects of the game for the last couple of years and delivered superb performance against the Irish opponent in the final battle of the event. The 2nd seed Swedish played terrific badminton in the whole match and
finished it up in straight games by working for only 38 minutes in the court.
While playing against Stephenson, Borg proved it that he has attained the skills of the highest class which are necessary to survive in the arena of elite shuttlers. In the first game, both shuttlers played well but Borg dominated the game in the end and
won it. The second game was a little bit easy for the Swedish as he won it with a four-point margin.
Right from the initial points of the opening game, the Swedish established his dominance in the match by playing at a high speed and kept his opponent moving in all corners.
The wonderful smashes of Borg coupled with fast drop shots made his opponent struggling in picking the bird early. The Swedish played planned badminton as he was targeting the weak points of his opponent cleverly. He remained dominant in major part of the
opening set.
The wonderful game in the concluding phase of the opening set helped Borg to bag the opening set with a decent margin of 21-18 by consuming 21 minutes in the court.
In the second game, Stephenson tried to employ a changed strategy to stop the aggression of his opponent but failed because of the fast speed of the Swedish. Borg executed impressive strokes from all areas of the court and maintained a wonderful pressure
on his opponent throughout the match.
The Swedish played flawless badminton throughout the second game and finished it off in an impressive fashion with a margin of 21-17 by taking 17 minutes in the court. Borg emerged as victorious against the Irish in the title match by ending it up with a
21-18 and 21-17 score on the board.
