Ichiro Suzuki helps New York Yankees overcome Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 – MLB Update
New York Yankees edge the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, September 19 in second game of their three match series.
Yankees delivered a clinical 4-2 win in series opener and they continued to play aggressively in Game 2 to wrap up an impressive series victory. Yankees’ win against Toronto also helped them reclaim their Number one status on the American League East Division
standings table.
However, with Baltimore Orioles are fighting hard to grab the Number one spot, Joe Girardi and company will be looking to continue their winning streak to ease into the playoffs. Only a few hours after starting pitcher Andy Pettitte produced a match winning
performance, David Phelps followed his footsteps to help his side prevail in Game 2.
Overall, Phelps gave up just three hits and one run in six plus solid innings. Striking-out six batters, he looked on top of his game-play. Relief pitcher Rafael Soriano grabbed his 42nd save of the year after he pitched the perfect ninth.
Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria put Blue Jays on the board with an RBI single to centre in the second inning. New York responded immediately as Chris Stewart hit a ground rule double to left in the second to level the score 1-1. Ten times All Star Ichiro Suzuki,
who was recently acquired by the Yankees, delivered the tie breaking single to left in the eighth inning.
"I haven't done anything different today so I don't know what the difference was," Suzuki said through a translator.
"I came in the middle of the season and I always wanted to contribute, wanted to help in this pennant race and today is a great day that I was able to help," said Suzuki, who was acquired in a trade from Seattle in late July. "I'm very sad the day is over."
"It was just an unbelievable day," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said.
Toronto’s starter Ricky Romero gave up seven hits and one run in six sharp innings. Relief pitcher Steve Delabar took the loss after giving up the go ahead run in the eighth.
