Question:

Icy Manipulator / Haste (Magic the Gathering)?

On my opponent's turn, I play Icy Manipulator to tap one of his creatures.

He wants to play an instant that gives the creature that I tapped Haste in order to use it to attack.

I tell him that Haste is mainly to bypass summoning sickness and that there is nothing in the definition of Haste that would allow him to untap his creature.

The rule book defines Haste as --- "A creature with haste can attack or use activated abilities whose cost includes the tap symbol or the untap symbol even if it hasn’t been controlled by its controller continuously since the start of his or her most recent turn."

Am I correct that he would have to find a way to un tap his creature in order to use it in an attack???? (since Attacking requires the player to tap his creature)

  1. If he finds a way to untap his creature, then he could use it to attack and use tap abilities.  If he were able to give it haste as a response to you using the Icy, then he can use the ability as a responce to it being tapped.

    Also,

    * The "summoning sickness" rule applies to {Q}. If a creature with an {Q} ability hasn't been under your control since your most recent turn began, you can't play that ability. Ignore this rule if the creature also has haste.

    {Q} means untap symbol.

If you tap a creature with haste who has an untap ability, that creature can untap on it's own, ignoring the summoning sickness.

Here is where I got that info.  Just use CTRL + F and type in untap to find the ruling.

  2. yes u are 110% correct, your friend needs to learn the rules.

  3. You are only correct if you tapped the creature before the actual attack.

You can’t tap something in response to it attacking, because by the time you tap it, it has already tapped itself and attacked. So, if you tapped it in response to it tapping, you’re out of luck.

However, from the description, it seems that you have it correct. You tap down the opposing creature. Now, the controller can’t declare an attack in response because such a thing does not exist in magic. In order to attack with the creature, the controller would have to find a way to untap it first.

    Hope that helped!

  4. Yes! you are absolutely correct your friend cannot untap his creature even if it has haste.

  5. You are correct, Haste does not untap creatures. The only thing haste does is "remove" summoning sickness, nothing else.
