  1. Maybe you could go with more dramatic versions of those colors, in a limited palette.  By doing so, it would make the lesser colors fade or just become accent in the room.  For example:  Navy/ gold (metallic, even), Pale blue/ chocolate (or even bronze).  These would give you the dramatic contrast like the red/ black, but within your color scheme.

    Good Luck.

As for "themes"...they can become tiresome. I'd suggest doing a large canvas that you can remove when you tire of it, instead of painting a design on the whole wall.  For the Navy/ gold, an asian design might be nice, like your name in Chinese characters or a silhouette of a cherry blossom tree...for the Chocolate/ pale blue, you might try really graphic designs, wide stripes, circles, or geometric shapes.  Try looking on Pottery Barn webite or the domino magazine site for cool/ modern ideas.

  2. I agree with the previous answer: unless you want it to look like a rainbow then you should only stick to two main colours in whatever shades you like.  When you start adding a third or more colours you lose the 'uniform' effect and things can start to go very wrong.
