Question:

Idea how to bringing water on a plane?

I have a flight that will take me a total of 11 hours next week, and then back again 7 days later. I never buy bottled water (huge waste of plastic and money) and was trying to figure out how to get my own bottle on the plane. I was wondering if anyone else had tried this. I use those aluminum water bottles and I was thinking that if I brought it through security empty and then filled it before I got on the plane would that be a problem? What do you think? Does anyone do this?

  1. You will not be allowed to take any fluid filled container on a plane, give it up.  They will have some for you on the plane.  Deal.

  2. they have free water on the plane in cups so dont worry

  3. Okay many people have "old rules" on here and don't have the facts.  Why not just go to the site I've listed below and get the facts from the horses mouth to save yourself any hassle:

    http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/p...

  4. Ok you're just going to have to stop hugging a tree for a few hours. You cannot bring more than 3 oz of liquid onto the plane, they will serve you water, chill out.

  5. You can take an empty bottle through security and fill it in the terminal and take it on the plane. They don't care about the container, it's what people could put in them before they arrive to the terminal that "looks" like water that worries them, everything inside the terminal is generally deems "safe" and you can take it on the plane. I take drinks, food, ect on all the time. Just make sure you have a lid for your drink.

  6. Yeah you could that. I think that would be your safest bet.

  7. yes that would work... of course you will be opening yourself up to extra security measures by brying a round metal container, empty or not, onto the plane.

But hey if you relish the thought of wasting more of your time and possibily getting an up close and personal pat down from a handsie rent a cop... go for it.

  8. You can't....you have to buy water IN the airport AFTER security. You can't take metal containers on the plane, they won't let you.

You can't take your own water in, they won't let you...

My husband flies every 2 wks. (has for yrs...)I KNOW what they'll do to you if they find a metal bottle on you and if you try and take your own inside...You'll be put in a room and questioned, even though you've done nothing wrong.

So suck it up and buy water in the airport AFTER security.

  9. Bringing a bottle through empty and filling it on the other side of security would work.  They will let you carry a bottle of water onto the plane from the gate area (as long as you didn't bring it filled with water from the other side of security).  They sell stuff like that in the gate area all of the time.  I always travel with a bottle of water (that I buy in the gate area).

It seems like an awful lot of trouble to avoid buying one bottle of water, considering you're about to spew all kinds of pollutants into the air on that flight, but "to each their own" I suppose.

  10. If you really wanted to bring an empty water bottle security doesn't mind as long as it's empty and not metal so get a plastic one.

  11. I suggest drinking from the water fountain, then on a plane drinking what they serve you. I really wouldnt chance it through security. Honestly.

  12. I think the rules say that the container has to be clear and plastic.

Here is the TSA site that discusses this stuff.

    http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/p...

It does not say anything about clear, plastic container but you are limited to 3 oz.  That is not much for an 11 hour flight.  I would suspect though that security would want to inspect an aluminum water bottle carefully and may even tell you that you cannot take it onboard.  I would not risk that.  Just get water on the plane.

  13. Why go through all the hassle? Just buy a bottle of water after you pass security. The airline will provide you with water anyways and if you still need more, you'll have the one you already purchased. Good luck!

  14. Nothing will work. Security is tighter than ever.  just buy a bottle after the gate.  I don't like that either but that's the way it is now.

  15. A lot of, um, interesting responses.

You *should* be fine taking an empty aluminum bottle through security.  It's not been a problem for me when taking an empty metal travel mug through on a few occasions.  Just make it clear that it's empty and that there is no liquid swishing around in between layers.  I fill it up in the water fountains airside, can often get free ice from a vendor, and mix those single serving koolaid or lemonade packs.
