Question:

Idea to reduce taxes... Your opinion?

With the government clamping down on benefit claimers I have an idea.

Why not replacing people who leave manual labor jobs in the public sector with healthy people who have been unemployed for more than 12 months?

For example: A dustman (nothing against dustmen, they do a great job) hands in his notice and instead of PAYING another dustman, Joe Blow, who has been unemployed for 15 months is told to get out of bed and join the crew until he finds a job, otherwise his benefits get stopped. Same can go for any job that is either considered unskilled or that has an unskilled element to it (ie: a groundskeeper could have one as a labourer). Eventually, the entire public labour-force will be "volunteers"!

At least this should bring down the council tax rates etc.

What does everyone think? Is there a major hole in this idea (other than the fact that people will say that the unemployment rates will be affected by not rehiring)?

  1. you get tax deductions when you donate old items to charity

  2. There will allways be 2 types of people...the ones who chop and split wood and put the wood into a pile in the town square...and the ones who take it for heat...or cooking... and provide nothing in return.

  3. Does Joe Blow get paid at least National Minimum Wage for doing the dustman's job?  Then its fair.

Otherwise its just slave labour and a way to get work done on the cheap.  People who are being forced to work for no pay are called slaves - plus they are unlikely to be very motivated about doing a good job . . .

  4. Ok so, a person lost a job and now will be forced to work in order to collect the money which that person has already paid to the goverment in the form of FICA taxes. Great idea work twice to collect money you already worked for in the first place. You do know that slavery was outlawed like over 100 years ago right?

  5. in theory that is a good idea, but in practise i dont see it working, there are just too many people unemployed, and what will start to happen, is people will start finding things wrong with them, bad backs, etc etc...also what happens to said person handing in their notice, what if they are handing in to go on the dole themselves, the government once had training schemes going where they 'gaurunteed' employment at the end of it, this too was unsuccessful, what they have to do is some kind of time limit, say 6months, to find a job in your given area, if you arent working in that time, then the jobcentre have to find some employment for you....whatever it ends up being....simple in theory....one other thing...we have to stop letting every one and their dog move here and settle down

  6. What about choosing how much tax you pay? This was almost the case with the old 'purchase tax' because it was, roughly speaking, levied on luxury goods. So an enhanced version of that might be a good idea. So jewelry, cosmetics, powerful cars, theatre tickets anything non vital could come in at a high rate of tax.

Biblically, farmers were not to harvest right up to the edge of their fields, but that strip round the edge was left for the poor. As I understand it, they had to come and get it which involved work - somewhat similar to your suggestion.

  7. Great idea, but you can give the unemployed person a job, but you can't make him work.

  8. All i can say is the Billions just borrowed by the Chancellor are going to be used as sweeteners; to bribe us to vote for them in the next General Election (so, maybe he is going to have it in 2009 before things get even worse for Mr Brown?!).

  9. A famous American once said this; "The best form of taxation is a lottery, since only the willing will pay".

    Ben Franklin.

What happened to that Revolutionary idea?

Something definately went wrong if you ask me.

Governments only levy tax upon the people in order to make them obey.  It's based upon the theory of control of the people using the stick and carrot method.  Or, in this case, all stick and no carrot.

    DOWN WITH GOVERNMENT

    POWER TO THE PEOPLE

  10. yes forced labour slavery  .   ruthless employers will only use the unfortunate  and sack everyone else  to make more money and profit
