Question:

Ideal Rugby Position?

My nephew just started to play rugby. His favorite position is hooker. He is 6'1 190 lbs. He says he likes hooker because he feels like a back rower, but he gets to scrum in the tight five. He is 2 inches taller than both props. I notice that most hookers are shortter than props. is it a problem to be taller?

  1. Not a major as long as he can still hook the ball. Can use to his advantage when it's opposition put in by using size and recah to push and try to hook a tight head.

  2. its hard to say  depends on the opposition but try playing him at center and see how he goes on there and if not move him back and no harm done but no its not a disadvantage as such just a difference.

  3. No real prob as long as his technique is ok and he can hook the ball in the scrum, could use to his advantage by using extra power/height to get under oppo hooker on their put in.

  4. at times it can be an advantage for that position. it allows the hooker to throw higher in the lineout and it easier for the hooker to control the scrum if he is taller than the opposition hooker. John Smit (south african captain, world cup winner 2007) is tall for his position but south africa, when on form has one of the best scrums in the world. they also have the best lineout.

    being tall, is advantageous

  5. itsz not a big prob aslong as he can hook the ball he sould be fine so no big probs there
