Question:

Ideal golf bag weight?

I just joined a new league, and all the guys walk. So I've transitioned from riding in a cart, to carrying my bag. It's been nice so far, but what's the ideal weight for bag, stuff and clubs. Right now, I'm at 22.4lbs. Good, bad? Should I do more?

  1. the lighter the better, i mean you're gonna be carrying it... as long as you're not dead by the end of the round it doesn't matter. just make sure to have everything you need in the bag.

  2. I don't know how your 22 pounds compares to other golfers, but as long as you feel comfortable and can make it easily through your league's round, you're ok.

Easiest way to cut weight is the obvious: remove unused gear (clubs, water/range balls, bulk bags of tees, brushes or other utility items). Next step would be a new bag.

Most stand or carry bags these days advertise their (empty) weight as a selling point. For example:

    Bag Boy Cosmic [ http://rockbottomgolf.com/bag-boy-cosmic... ] - 4.5 lbs

    Nike Xtreme [ http://rockbottomgolf.com/nike-golf-xtre... ] - 5 lbs

    Bag Boy Clip-Lok [ http://rockbottomgolf.com/bag-boy-clip-l... ] - 5.5 lbs

If you want to take it to the extreme, Sunday or pencil bags are about as light as you can get. Some don't have spines which can be awkward over 18 holes or on a push/pull cart.

    Odyssey Pencil [ http://rockbottomgolf.com/odyssey-golf-p... ] - "Under 4 pounds"

    Callaway Pencil/Sunday [ http://rockbottomgolf.com/callaway-golf-... ] - No spine; 2.2 lbs

Remember that you certainly don't have to carry your bag to walk. Lots of quality push and pull carts are available for at or around $99.

Finally, remember that graphite shafts weigh less than steel. I can't imagine it would make that much of a difference, and I don't think it's a good idea to switch shafts JUST for less weight. If you can get fitted or use a launch monitor or other technological breakthrough and find that graphite shafts are what's best for your particular game, then go for it. Otherwise it is certainly not worth the time/cost.

    Best of luck!

  3. There is no specific ideal golf bag weight. Its all about comfort. you need to be able to walk all 18 comfortably and be able to carry everything you may need during the course of the round. Don't add or take stuff out to get it to a certain weight. My bag is a little heavier than that but i know i'm not forgetting anything if it rains or anything.
