Ideal location for hotel in Rome?

Question

We are staying in Rome for a couple of nights. We want to be as close to the attractions as possible. could you suggest some central location for a hotel where we will have connections to important tourist attractions...colosseum, vatican, st.peters etc? Any hotel name suggestions are also welcome.Thanks.

In the center:

- Piazza di Spagna if you have enough money

- close to Piazza Barberini (I love that place)

- Piazza Navona

cheaper but central locations:

- Via Veneto (!!! reccomended !!!: good connection to Piazza di Spagna)

- Trastevere (nightlife !!!)

PS: if you'r lucky you can meet Tom Hanks these days for the making of Angels and Demons!!!!

Basically any of the locations listed by the others so far are good places for access to the tourist sites. It's hard to recommend a specific hotel without knowing your budget requirements, but here are a couple of options I like:

I use the Venere.com site for booking hotels here in Italy including several times in Rome: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/ You can search by price, rating or other criteria.

The Romano has an excellent location just across from the Forum. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... or the Galatea (haven't stayed here, but would not hesitate to - $123) http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... The Capo d'Africa is a really good hotel on the other side of the Colosseum - http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... and somewhat more expensive. sure.try to be as close as posssible to the coiseum.via del corso is close.a more expensive area would be close to pantheon.rome is beautiful and you can walk everywhere..the subway is easy and from the colseum not far, the line is blue meaning you have to do maybe 3 stops and change to the orange line.just be careful of pickpokets!!have fun.u can email me if u want

I agree with all of the suggestions offered, but want to warn you of one thing: decent hotels in Rome are EXPENSIVE.  Anything you stay in for under 100 euros a night can't possibly be very inviting.  For a decent double room with breakfast, private bath, and air conditioning (absolutely essential for Rome in the summer) is more apt to run 150 euros or more per night.  It is also critical to remember that the Roman version of a "quiet" room will not be anything like that which you will experience in the US.  Rome is a big, busy, and very noisy city.  If you are at all bothered by traffic or pedestrian noise, always request an "interior" room.  you won't likely have a view, but at least you will be shielded somewhat from the din of the city.

Why not take an exclusive flat, right near Piazza di Spagna or the Fontana di Trevi or Piazza Navona? All top locations.

There are lot's to be had, just as expensive or cheap as hotels.  You can even get a full inclusive housekeeping service for one or two days. It's much more fun to be a "local" . Look for an agency that manages these bookings on the web. For starters I'll give you one.
