for now, I guess technology in this area is advancing too quickly to go too far into the future!

I think that if we found more efficient ways to harness the suns energy, than this would probably be a pretty important aspect of your home. Because most people dont like the thought of solar panels on their property, than you wouldnt have to worry about this too much.

What if we figured out a way to control indoor climate more energy efficiently? better insulation, and more smalle rooms, rather than fewer large ones, so that hot air doesnt have the chance to seperate from cool air.

Also, the conservation of water may become something to worry  about in our near furture-

Water from other sources than our toilets and sinks can be cleaned and reused, even with todays technol. pretty easily. From dishwashers and washing machines, water can be diverted into some kind of a system that uses water plants, rocks, and other natural and artificial filters to remove solids, phosphorus, and even dnagerous bacteria from used water which can be repumped into your standard plumbing to be reused.

though it is expensive, houses can easily be made to be self sustainable.

Try looking at the US Green building council Leedership in Energy and Design website.  It is all about green building, which in my opinion is the future of homes.  Add those ideas for design and then for neighborhoods I imagine clusters of houses located close to each other with easy access to public transportation and open space surrounding them.

The house would have motion detectors that can track your movement and turn on the lights in rooms you are in or in rooms where you are heading and turn them off in rooms you just left.

The house also be able to detect if you are sleeping or not and would adjust the lights according.

Same for day light, as the sun sets, light levels inside the house would increase automatically to compensate

The house would convert solar energy into electricity and store it in battery and would use it to run various electric appliances.

The TV would adjust it's brightness according to the amount of sunlight coming to your room or according to the amount of lighting.

Your house might even use your garbage to generate electricity.

It would use very energy efficient lighting.

Future refrigerators would have an electronic controller to help with not wasting too much energy.

Needless to say, it would also have the standard stuff, like a solar water heater, all walls, roofs and windows properly insulated, use of rain water, etc.
