Question:

Ideas for Hawaiian-themed birthday cake?

Its for my neighbors son, Patrick... turning 13. NOT going to do all of this, but just brainstorming.

I'm thinking, surfer/surfboard at least, hibiscus flowers, palm trees (maybe exaggerated big ones sticking off a map of the islands?) shark (so its more boy-ish than girly w/ the leis and maybe hibiscus flowers), blue background... and the border will be fish/pineapples/or hibiscus flowers. His fav color is green so the writing will be that color... most of the cake is blue tho due to the water.

Any other ideas??? Maybe something simpler?

  2. I love the surfer w/ a surf board and he could use blues/greens/yellows

    How fun

  3. virgin pina colada would be a great flavor

  4. If you want to make it more Hawaiian I like the warrior helmet with the feathers. You can use a chopstick to hold it up in the middle of the cake. If you don't want to put to many flowers on you can put ukuleles on the outside the cake made out of sugar cookies, go to yahoo image for a template, for the strings you can use that fruit roll up candy. You can to yahoo image for a template of a tribal tattoo and just use the frosting to color it in. These would be in addition to your surfer/surfboards.

template is just a picture you can print out and use as a stencil or for tracing.

you can also trim it with some chocolate macadamia nuts, they look like little coconuts.

  5. I love the idea of an volcano cake!  Why not mimic the latest Hawaiian volcano to erupt...Kilauea!  At Kilauea the volcano erupts red lava into the ocean.  So, why not place the erupting volcano cake on a big board frosted with bright blue icing.  You could place on the blue-frosted board surfers, sharks, wave crests in white and script "Happy Birthday" to the lucky boy with a erupting volcano cake!

It's definitely Hawaiian-themed and it's FUN and interactive!!!

  10. Ahhh! You should make a pineapple out of yellow coconut somewhere in the cake. It would be cute and tasty.  =)

I like the idea of a shark wearing a lei and a surfer somewhere on the cake. If the kids like almond it's pretty easy to make marzipan flowers and you could have one candy hibiscus for each child, which would look like a lot of work was done but very simple for you. Roll little balls of marzipan, flatten them out, and pinch and shape them until they look like flowers. Let them dry for a few hours so the shape isn't easily destroyed. You can color the marzipan before you start making the flowers with liquid food coloring or you can "paint" them with powered color.

    Have fun!
