I'm not real sure what a golden birthday is?  How much are you willing to spend?  Gift cards to a music or video store might be good. What  is the teen interested in?  If  he/she is  in to sports, a gift card to a sporting goods store would be perfect.

Give him a Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone[next birthday next book(Chamber of Secrets)] if he/she had no started/finished reading it.i started to read it when i was 9 years old.Even now(13) i repeat reading them.

He will definitely find it useful.

do not get him an iphone but if your getting him something expensive( i think a lcd tv for him if hes into gaming) make sure you get insurance because im 14 getting a 32inch sony bravia tv and before that ive broken many thinks like psp, computers and ive had insurance on them( like 10$ extra) and it saves money
