  1. I've seen a number of students develop historical type DVDs on surfing lately, particularly in towns along the East Coast.  Do a little research and then write a script you can narrate about the history of surfing in your area.  As you narrate, throw in some photos of the various things you mention, including any historical surf pictures that you can find.  Also, ask some old time  locals if they have any old surfing video footage of themselves you can use.  Then conduct an interview on them so you can splice in shorts. End with some footage of current local hot shots and another interview or two.  Make sure you have each person sign a photo release before you use their picture or film.  When you add in a little background music the DVD will be awesome for the locals.

  2. Not sure how helpful this will be, but I'll second the recommendation for Step Into Liquid.  It's the best surfing DVD I own, and has a ton of extras on the 2-DVD set so you'll have lots of inspiration for different possible angles you can take on the subject.

The video isn't particularly stylized, but the surf environment provides the style itself in Step.  There's really little hocus pocus you'd need to add to make it look good.

  4. Email me, I will give you the email address of a Australia surf film maker, he will give you some good ideas:)

  5. I've seen a lot of surfing vids (my uncle is robert august, he forcefeeds me old films and history and stuff) and i would have to say that the coolest, most enjoyable one i've ever seen is step into liquid.  it's the only film that really talks about all the different forms of surfing everywhere, which is a really cool idea.  i'm not sure if that's where you want to go, but you said "an informative learning tool," and this could teach people about all of the different forms of surfing, from surfing the great lakes to ripping teahupoo.  anyway, good luck. peace
