  1. go SCARY..nd if u want it 2 be fun do lke a dance theme..people will LOVE it..trust me

  2. Decorate your party with scary Halloween scene setters with cemetery terror party supplies, play haunted house horrors music. For more Halloween party theme ideas and costumes, visit http://www.pinatas.com/Halloween_Party_T...

  3. What do you mean "the are where the party will be"?

First pick a theme, and stick to it. If you do pirates don't put in Vampires. If you do Mummies, don't toss in Vampires. If you do Vampires, don't put in Mummies or Pirates.  If you do UFO abuduction and Aliens, stick to Aliens and don't toss in graveyards and ghosts.

As for themes...pick a horror movie and go with it. You may even want to show the movie late in the party...or not it is up to you. For example if you went with the Legend of Sleepy Hollow you could show Sleepy Hollow by Tim Burton, and The Hollow (it's on DVD) and a couple of others. I'd avoid slasher flicks...they aren't so much scary as gory.  If you go with the Aliens theme, there are tons of Roswell type movies you can work with, and you can serve really wierd looking food.

Also, under all circumstances avoid Tarot cards and Ouija boards. Lots of people (more than you would think) won't have anything to do with them because of their demonic associations.  I'm not going to debate the merits of that argument with you here... the point is it sort of ruins the mood of the party if you pull out a party game that insults someone's religion.

Second run the theme through every detail of the party. Have you ever been on The Haunted Mansion at Disney?  If so remember it..if not google up the youtubes of it. Notice how well it works because of the attention to detail.  You don't have to go that far, which is good because you won' t have their budget, but pay as much attention to details (like sound) as you can.  For a Mummy party you want Egyptian food. For a Frankenstien party you want German food, and maybe alcohol free beer. For Dracula you want Eastern European food and alcohol free red wine. Do NOT go serving the real thing...it's not worth the trouble you can get in if someone lets slip to their parents that they got alcohol at your party...much less if there is an accident. Make sure you have some sort of documentation that the stuff is alcohol free so just in case somebody does call up and yell at your dad for "Why were you serving my little Amy beer at your son's party last night?" you can say "Well I have the recipt for the keg right here, and it was alcohol free beer, and you can call the liquor store, so if she got plastered it had nothing to do with us."

Then set your house up as follows. The party will be in the backyard, the front of the house will be your "haunt". People have to go through the scary haunt to get to the party. Once in the party the frights will be over and they can concentrate on the party...but to get there they have to go through the haunt.

Youtube has lots of good videos on things like "How to make tombstones" and "how to make ground fog". etc.

Your best scares will come from suprising people.  For example, last year at halloween I set up a ghost that hung down over the doorway. When they came up to my door to trick or treat they triggered the ghost and some lights and sound activated and the ghost dropped down. It scared a couple of kids, but most of them saw it hanging up there.  THIS year I am setting up a dummy on the porch with a candy bowl in its lap. Everyone will assume that it is a real guy dressed as a dummy and they will be watching the dummy waiting for it to jump at them...and THEN the ghost drops down on them. Distract their attention one way, then have the scare come from the other directon.

One more note...go to the school librarian and ask her to get you a copy of THIS book.  A Halloween How To: Costumes, Parties, Decorations, & Destinations. Lesley Bannatyne; Pelican Publishing Co., 2001 http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~banna...

In it she talks about Ancient Celtic Halloween Customs, Early American Halloween Customs, and Victorian Halloween Customs. This may come as a shock, but this whole Boy meets Girl thing has been going on for thousands of years, and there are a great many old Halloween games that were (and are) basicly flirting exercises. She outlines some in her book...you might want to consider playing a couple at your party.  They would fit in well with the Legend of Sleepy Hollow theme, if you went with that one.

EDIT: You don't have to just go with Monster Mash for the music.  Manheim Steamroller has a good (not great but good) Halloween CD with some dance mixes. It's not a bad CD, but given how good their Christmas ones are a lot of people were expecting more, so ignore the bad reviews. It would be good to mix into your party music. http://www.amazon.ca/review/product/B000...

For Haunt music you want to go with Midnight Syndicate http://www.midnightsyndicate.com/  Hide a CD player (one with big speakers) out front in the "haunt" part of the party and have one of their CD's on play. IT really helps set a creepy mood and makes things much scarier.
