Question:

Ideas for being out all night with nothing to do?

So for summer my friends and I always stay out one night because we're kids and its fun to sneak around and be stupid.

But we're very uncreative this year and can't think of what we should do. We don't live in the city and it'd be better not to go to far.

any ideas?

we aren't getting drunk either, :P

  1. You didn't mention your age, so I'm guessing between 13 and 16.  Older than that, and you are likely to know a friend with an older brother or sister who could provide transportation.  Younger than that, and you probably wouldn't be able to get out of the house in the first place.  I will also assume that you live in a relatively rural area where there is NOTHING to do after a certain hour, like after the local hangouts close.  Been there, done that, but I wasn't able to stay out ALL night unless I was able to convince my parents that I was sleeping over at a friend's house.

Before I got mixed up with drugs and alcohol, some of my friends and I would walk the streets, kicking light poles until the light went out, trying to make the entire street dark, looking back, and laughing.  I heard that baseball bats work, too, but kicking the poles was more challenging.  It was even funnier when someone slipped on the grass and fell on their butt.  When I was a little older and drunk, one of the cool adult neighbors laughed her butt off when I landed on my butt, and I couldn't help but laugh, too.  I still think it was funny.

We also went into other people's yards and rearranged their furniture and/or lawn ornaments.  Stealing them was a definite no-no.  Making a lot of noise to wake them up afterward was kinda fun too, but it might cause the cops (if any) to come in and spoil the rest of your night.  Sometimes it's better to just rearrange stuff and go away quietly, then laugh about it afterward.

Destroying things, spray painting things, and throwing eggs isn't a good idea.  Pulling plants out of flower pots isn't a good idea either, and I regret doing that to the kind elderly woman who never gave up repotting the plants the next day.  Soaping windows is a safer option.  Throwing toilet paper into trees, over power lines, and over houses and other objects is a little more messy, but the mess goes away the first time it rains.  Please note that most of these activities will irritate many adults, sometimes to extremes.

Splitting your friends into teams and having friendly "wars" with each other is another option.  Shaving cream, silly string, water pistols,. water cannons, water balloons, and other water toys are harmless.  Rocks, soda cans full of water or dirt, BB guns, and other items are not harmless.  If you are in an area where noise will get you into trouble, a war probably isn't a good idea.

If noise isn't an issue, late night volleyball, basketball, and football are options.  I used to live next door to a playground where the drunks from the local bar would have their annual "snow bowl", where they played football in the dark on the snow-covered playground.  It was a little noisy, but most of the neighbors would hear the noise, then watch the action and laugh.

It really helps if you have a place you can go where there are cool parents around.  Then you can do a lot of these things with fewer objections from neighbors, and even do things like have campfires, where you can roast marshmallows and cook hot dogs on sticks, maybe even light some sparklers, snakes, and things like that.  An especially cool adult might be willing to launch bottle rockets or sky rockets, but noisier stuff might cause the neighbors to report you...depending on how cool the neighbors are.

Other than that, hanging out in a fort with flashlights, telling stories, playing truth or dare (within reason), and other games might be fun.  Some people like to bring out a OUIJI board (or whatever), but that can get a little spooky for some people.  Again, if noise doesn't matter, games like hide and seek and especially "scarecrow" were especially fun.

If you aren't familiar with scarecrow, it is kind of like hide and seek, except that the people who are found go to a "jail" and stay there until someone who is still free comes to the "jail" and tags them while the jail-keeper(s) are distracted by trying to catch other people who are still free.  The goal is to get all of the free people locked up in the jail, but that usually doesn't happen.  Eventually, the jailers give up and either a new game is started or everyone agrees it's time to go home or do something else.  I never played a game of scarecrow where everyone got locked up.  LOL.

I hope this helps.  Having fun is one thing, but getting picked up by the cops or reported by people to your parents is another.  It's important to know when you are crossing the line and if you do, be sure you are willing to accept the consequences.  As boring as it might sound, sometimes a "stay up all night" sleepover, late night pool party, or all-night video game tournament can get you in a lot less trouble.  Cool adults can let you have a lot of innocent fun.
