  1. You an find opportunities with many different organizations in your area via any or all of these web sites:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

  2. start a canned food drive, collect stuff for the salvation army near you, clean up a neighborhood, visit a nursing home, visit the children's hospital near you, tutor some kids, mentor some kids, go to the ymca, or just help a teacher organize herself.

  3. Pick up trash.

Or go down to your local homeless shelter/rescue mission and put in some good hours there.

  4. cleaning up the council neighborhoods and grave yards, looking after the elderly, working in the second hand shops

  5. If you are a Christian, the United States Corps of Chaplains is always looking for volunteers. You do need to be minister or Chaplain to join. The USCOC has opportunities available in all fifty states and D.C. You can learn more at: www.uscochq.com

  6. work in a women's or men's shelter, help paint rooms.  Pass out food for Easter to homeless people, clean up parks, or make benches for a park near a pond.

  7. Go to your local  fire department ask if they have any positions or suggestions.  Also look in the phone book for volunteers sometimes there are agencies that have listing and will describe jobs hours and ages required.  My son got a job at a museum painting and putting up displays till he was 16 then he worked at a bird rescue.

  8. My son is only fourteen, so his options were limited.  He volunteers at our local library where they always seem desperate for help.  He works with preschool kids  in some of their programs, but they have older people who shelve, check  stuff out, etc.  Probably grab as many hours as you want, and it comes across as both "literary" and community oriented.

  9. I'd check out the local humane society and see if they need some help - but that's because I'm an animal lover!

  10. Volunteering at a nursing home.  You can help them with activities and games.  I worked at a nursing home for 1 1/2 years.  It was very rewarding.  Most of the residents didn't have visitors come or family that cared and they looked forward to seeing those of us who work there and the volunteers as well.  You have no idea the impact you will make on their lives.  It will also enrich your life and it is easy, you get to talk, play and watch TV.  Hey you might even learn something.
