Ideas for job search with my athropology background?

I know that I can do about anything with a BS in Anthropology to a point. Personally, I have a BS in Anthropology with minors in music, geology, and American Indian Studies where I emphasized archeology and museum work. I am about 10 credits from a history degree too. I have been a stay-at-home-mom for 11 years off and on (off--I worked clerical jobs to make a little money here and there, but I don't want to do secretary jobs anymore). I want to use my education. I also enjoy working with kids and am a volunteer in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. Next year I can work part-time, but the following year I will be looking for full-time work. I am very adaptable. What would you recommend?

  1. "Bachelor's degree holders (in anthropology) have limited opportunities and in most social science occupations do not quality for 'professional' positions," the BLS notes in its latest Occupational Outlook notes. "The bachelor's degree, however, does provide suitable background for many different kinds of entry-level jobs, such as research assistant, administrative aide, or management and sales trainee."

If you're passionate about writing, you might pursue that. You could also look for work in a museum.

  2. You can work in cultural resource management.  It might be more travelling than you'd want to do with kids at home, but if you live in certain areas, you won't have to go far.  You'd work as an archaeological field technician, going out and working on digs before the developers come through and destroy everything.  Check out shovelbums.org and archaeologyfieldwork.com for an idea of what's out there.

  3. If you like working with kids a classroom aide is a good, but not lucrative, place to work.  The next step is a classroom teacher.

If that does not appeal to you, you could do what this anthro major did: get an MBA.

  4. You  could go into  a forensic anthropology or work as a technician (often aiding in research or administering tests) under the supervision of a psychologist.
