I know a decent amount of French and if needed I can brush up on it in college. What are some great, fun jobs I can get and what majors do I need to get them? I am interested in art and fashion but I also like the idea of working on a cruise ship. This sounds conceited but true, the one thing is I like to impress a lot of people so I guess I'm into being center of attention.

  1. sorry to burst your bubble, but you're quite far from being fluent. high school french, as hard as you may think it is, is only a foundation, which takes years of practice to get to fluency. i'd suggest studying french in college and studying abroad in france before you start to try to get a job using your french. as a major, i'd do a dual hospitality/french degree, that sounds right up your alley.

  2. I would concentrate on what skill it is that you want to offer.  Go to a career counselor, read some employment trends or do some soul searching or what it is that will enable you to make a good decision.  Pick a skill that will make you money and get good at it.  If it is tourism or travel that you like, study hospitality management.  If it is teaching, become a teacher. If it is engineering, go study engineering.

When you have your skill, your ability to speak French will be of added value.  You won't get a job because you speak French if you don't have a good skill to market your self to begin with.  French would help you get a good job if you are competing against 10 other equally qualified people for the same position yet you happen to speak French and they don't and the job happens to need people that speak French.

If you want to be an interpreter, then devote your next 7 or so years to French.  Have French be your undergrad and graduate degree.  Being an interpreter is an important job, but if you want a good position as one you will really have to know your stuff in and out and have credentials to back it up.

    Good luck!
